Bushwhacker Days started off with a few barks Wednesday evening.

Dogs from around the county appeared on the courthouse lawn to strut their stuff as part of the Vernon County People for Pets dog show. Nearly 20 canines participated in the annual event, taking home honors for a variety of skills, features and outfits.

One four-legged guest started the show, sporting a mane and hooves. Molly, a miniature horse, along with handler Carol Parmenter, rounded the contest area. Parmenter told dog show attendees that she and Molly visit schools, libraries, hospitals, nursing homes and a variety of other locations to provide therapy and smiles as part of Wonderful Animals Giving Support. The group has been offering animal therapy services since 2002.

Pups in attendance took home awards for being the best-dressed dog, having the sweetest face, being handsome in uniform, having the most spots and looking like their owner.

The show's grand finale was the Ruff Ruff Race, which required dogs to race to their owners after being called. Missy, small multi-colored dog with spots, took home the honor of race winner. She was the only dog to make it to her owner, though with several dogs named Buddy, some canines were confused on the raceway about which way to go.
