There will be several road closings around Nevada during the next few weeks, Nevada City Manager JD Kehrman told the city council during Tuesday night's meeting.

Nevada residents will need to be alert to these closings, he said.

"The railroad will be closing the Maple Street crossing on Friday to replace the rails," Kehrman said. This work is expected to be completed on Friday.

In addition Kehrman said that there would be a need to occasionally close some streets around Cottey College while the water mains are being replaced.

He said city crews are currently working on a water leak on south Ash Street. This is one of around 20 privately owned copper water lines that go under Ash Street. These water lines were all installed around the same time and many are failing.

The city has filed a plan with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to repair the leaks and the DNR is expected to approve this plan shortly, which will allow the city to repair all of the leaks without contacting the DNR for each one.

In other business the council:

* Voted 4-0, with Seth Barrett excused, to accept the low bid of $2.35 per gallon for slurry oil from Coastal Energy Corp. to be used in the city's street slurry seal program.

* Voted 4-0, with Seth Barrett excused, to pass on first reading a special ordinance approving amending the city code to update the Section 25-2, conditions of employment; Section 25-3, job classification and pay plan, and Section 25-4, fringe benefits.

* Voted 4-0 to adopt Resolution No. 1400, to waive the prohibition on discharging firearms and the closing hours of city parks to allow the Missouri Osage Territory Muzzleloaders to hold a sanctioned black powder competition and outdoor classroom at Marmaduke Park, Sept. 11-14.

* Voted 4-0 to pass on second reading a special ordinance approving a change order to the city's contract with Miller Construction, El Dorado Springs. The change order reduces the amount of the contract from $381,133 to $364,779.88, a difference of $16,353.12.
