Collision kills one driver, second seriously hurt

Larry Berry, a Bates County Southern Commissioner and former Hume School District Superintendent died Thursday evening after his car was struck by on oncoming truck.

According to a Missouri Highway Patrol crash report, Berry was traveling north along Route A in Bates County when a second driver, Wesley Hays, crossed the centerline of the roadway. Berry's car was struck head on by Hay's truck around 10:15 p.m.

Both drivers sustained serious injuries. Berry was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kan. There, the 65-year-old Hume resident was pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m. Hays, a 26-year-old Pleasanton, Kan., resident, was airlifted to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Robert Berry, who was a passenger in Larry Berry's car, received minor injures. The 20-year-old, of Hume, was treated at the scene by Bates County emergency personnel.

Funeral services for Larry Berry have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Larry L. Berry Gymnasium in Hume. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
