The Nevada High School girls' golf team placed fourth Friday at the Nevada Lady Tigers Invitational Tournament.

The 18 hole, eight-team tournament, took place at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course in Nevada. The course is a par 72, which breaks down to a par 36 on the front and back nines.

Joplin High School emerged victorious with a low team score of 340. Joplin's Samantha Stout came up with the low individual score of 76, shooting a 38 on both the front and back nine.

The tournament started at 8:30 a.m. At around 9:30 a.m., a light rain gradually picked up and began to pound the course.

Nevada High School golf coach, Brian Leonard, said the tournament would continue unless lightning was spotted. The tournament eventually concluded around 2 p.m.

Carthage High School finished in second place with a team score of 349. Carl Junction High School finished third with a 378, and Nevada tallied a final score of 381 for fourth.

"If you could have all of your girls under 100, which that averages 400 ---- that's usually not a bad score," Leonard said. "Sometimes you might have one or two girls that shoot in the 70s or 80s, and that is really going to help your team score.

"Team score-wise I'm pretty happy with. "I think it could have been 10 to 15 strokes better."

Low individual scorers for the Tigers were junior Michael Jones, who fired an 89, and senior Hannah Householder who scored out at 90.

Leonard said he was pleased with Jones' overall score, after he noticed she was struggling in practice earlier in the week.

"She was struggling in practice with not having a real fluent swing," he said. "I was a little concerned.

"We talked before the tournament today about her back swing and following through. But 89 is a pretty good score."

Jones was also pleased with her performance.

"I think I did pretty good for my first tournament of the season," she said. "I think my long-game was my strongest area today. And just having fun with it."

"My putting was good. I two-putted mostly."

Jones said the pouring rain played a factor.

"It made things a little slick and cold," she said.

Jones said going forward she plans on working on her pitching.

"I didn't really do well with those (today)," she said.
