Errors prove costly for Cottey
Cottey College dropped a recent decision to host LaBette County Community College. The Comets rebounded from a 25-12 loss in the opener to squeeze out the second, 25-23 but lost 25-22.
"It was one of those nights where we never could strike up a long standing spark, nor were things going our way," said Cottey Coach Marla Kannady-Foreman.
"We had 13 serve receive errors on the night and that is not normal for us. Labette really only had one player who was high in aces on the stats, so I am not sure why our passing was poor on the evening.
"We have been doing well on serve receive in our past games with much tougher serves coming at us. Our hitting percentage was down once again, and we cannot afford to be all over the page on hitting percentages to compete with the Kansas schools.
"We competed in the second and third games from the looks in the scores, but I still caught them out of position defensively, and we were making too many hitting errors, which could have been the difference in the game.
"We dug ourselves a four-point hole in game two, and it was 9-0 before we made our first point in game three, yet the scores were tight by the end.
"We had 13 hitting errors on the evening, so I am going to be calling extra practice time to go over just setting/hitting, and hopefully push past this poor hitting percentage we seem to be getting into more than not.
"We had a good night of touches on the blocks, and also full blocks. However, Labette's coverage managed to scoop up several of our full blocks, and they were able to reload for another attack on us.
Kannady-Foreman said she was impressed with her team's 48 digs.
Madelyn Underwood registered a team-high 33 percent hit percentage.
Katherine Brockus, Kelsey Davidson, Morgan Taylor and Regan Kannady each had an ace. Kannady led with eight assists, with Maddie Lugenbeel adding seven. Kelsey Davidson and Madelyn Underwood contributed five kills each, Jalilah Cox four, and Kannady three. Kannady also added two blocks, with Taylor and Davidson one apiece. Brockus and Sydney Curnes paced the team with nine digs each. Taylor and Davidson netted eight and Lugenbeel six.
