Coming off a tough loss on Tuesday against Hume, the Bronaugh Wildcats bounced back, as they defeated the Northeast Vernon County Knights 25-20 and 25-21, Thursday night in Walker.

With the win, Bronaugh moves to 7-10 on the year, while NEVC falls to 3-4.

"I told them we played better in terms of some of the smaller stuff," Wildcats coach James Frank said. "But I don't feel like we played a lot better than we did on Tuesday when we lost.

"We still have some things to work on. We knocked some serves out of bounds, it seemed pretty routinely. And we made a couple of defensive miscues. But it was a good conference win for us. And they're probably the third best team in the conference, assuming we're the second best team behind Hume. But we're all pretty close."

The Knights started out hot in the first set, taking leads of 7-3 and 12-6.

However, Bronaugh would fight back, tying the score 13-13, before eventually taking a 21-20 lead. With sophomore Katey Rider serving, the Wildcats finished out the set with a flurry, scoring the final five points.

"We only missed three serves and that's always a plus," NEVC coach Erica Mott said. "We've only played seven games, and they've played twice as much as we have. So they have a lot more experience this year playing with each other.

"And we're close. We're getting there."

Second set

The Wildcats started out better this time around, taking an early 8-7 lead. Bronaugh went up 14-9, before the Knight went on a run, to close the gap to 16-13.

Trailing 24-20, Knights senior Becky Jennings came through with a soft tap to keep the match alive. The Knights weren't able to get any closer, as the game ended on a serve-error.

"I think we can improve on all of our areas really," Mott said. "It's always a growing game when you have younger underclassmen playing with upperclassmen. There's always room to grow.

"I think we tend to lose momentum if we mess up a couple of times. We just need to make sure that we can keep on that right track."

Frank said that he thinks his team still has room to improve defensively.

"I'd definitely like to see us be better about getting into our base defense," he said. They had one really good player, No. 4 (Jennings), and she was incredibly intelligent.

"She put the ball into places where she knew we weren't. And if they would have had six players all doing that, we would have been in some deep, deep trouble. Because we were in places where we shouldn't have been, a lot."
