NMS seventh-graders belt Butler in season opener
The Nevada seventh grade basketball girls opened their season with a defeat of visiting Butler, 40-12, at NMS, Tuesday night.
The hosts built a 10-2 first-quarter lead, and stayed even with the visitors for the most part in the second period for a 16-10 halftime advantage.
They put together another 10-2 quarter scoring difference in the third period for a 26-12 edge, and then went on a 14-0 tear in the final frame to put the game away.
"It was our first game of the season, and we had some normal first-game issues: a lot of nerves, trying to go 100 mph, and being a little scatter-brained," said NMS Coach Danny Penn.
"That said, we were able to settle down, especially in the second half, and finished the game well.
"It was the girls' first game playing as a Nevada Lady Tiger, and we had a nice crowd in the stands tonight."
Calli Beshore led the Tigers with 12 points. Nevada got double-figure scoring from both Payge Dahmer and Jadeann Highley, who had 10 each. Teagan Charles added six and Alexis Leighty two.
"I was proud of our hustle," said Penn. "We had multiple girls diving on the floor for loose balls, jumping in the passing lanes, and looking to run and score in transition.
"Teagan Charles did a great job of blocking out and controlling the defensive glass. I was proud of Calli Beshore's tenacity and hard work in forcing Butler to start their offense before they wanted to.
"Jadeann Highley did a nice job of working hard to establish nice post position and our perimeter ball handlers did a nice job of getting her the ball in a position to score.
"We need to clean up some errors in our passing as well as our full-court press responsibilities. There were a few times where Butler was able to move the ball up the floor as if we weren't there, but that can be corrected.
"Overall, I was very happy with our hustle and effort."
The Tigers were due to play Thursday night at Seneca.
