Glenna Lee Johnson
Glenna Lee Johnson, 83, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, at Freeman West Hospital, in Joplin, Mo., following a sudden illness. Glenna was born Nov. 29, 1931, to Charles E. Swiney and Flossie M. (Camden) Swiney. She was united in marriage to Deward E. Messer and he preceded her in death in 1986. Glenda later married Jay Johnson and he also preceded her in death.
Glenda grew up in Bunker, Mo., and graduated from Bunker High School. In the late 1960s, she came to Cedar County where she was employed as a case worker for the Cedar County Health Department for several years. She then worked for the Nevada State Hospital for 24 years, until her retirement. Glenda was baptized in the Apostolic Lighthouse Church in Nevada. In her free time she enjoyed hosting dominos games at her home with friends.
Survivors include her four children, Carolyn Thomas and her husband, Ed, Harwood, Mo., Carlene Berning and her husband, Barry, Milo, Mo., Will Messer and his wife, Sandra, Joplin, Mo., and Ed Messer and his wife, Kristin, Carthage, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was also she preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dick Swiney, Charles Swiney, and Harold Swiney; and one sister, June Swiney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Dec. 10, at Ferry Funeral Home, in Nevada. Interment will follow in Osborn Cemetery, in Joplin, Mo. Family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service.
