Against Smith-Cotton, NHS girls win, boys fall
Nevada High School basketball teams split with Sedalia Smith-Cotton Friday on the road, with the girls prevailing 49-37 and the boys falling 57-41.
In the girls' game, the Tigers got out quickly, racing to an 18-5 first-quarter advantage. NHS went cold, managing just two points in the second period. The Tiger defense allowed just seven points but the margin was cut to 20-12 at intermission.
Nevada recovered for a strong third quarter, outscoring the home team 20-8 to take a 40-20 lead with eight minutes left.
Smith Cotton was able to close in the fourth with a 17-point outburst while Nevada managed nine points, but the Tigers were never threatened.
Mikayla Bartlett rifled in 24 points to pace the winners, with Rilie Good adding 13, Megan Payne nine, Chloe Bartlett two, and Jansen Miller one.
In the B team game, Nevada won 28-14.
In the boys' game, Nevada started strong and led after eight minutes, at 13-6. The Tigers were still on top at halftime, despite a 14-9 difference in the second, at 22-20.
But the hosts managed to squeak past at the end of the third, at 39-37.
Nevada was unable to get the offense going in the final frame, getting outscored 18-4 for the decision.
Matthew Sommer connected for 17 points to pace the Tigers. Brandon Barker added 15, Clay Dingman five, and Broderick Mason and Anthony Fox two each.
Nevada dropped the B team game 51-33.
