Christmas memories made to share

Everyone has a favorite Christmas memory.

It can be something simple, like sharing a moment with loved ones no longer present.

It can be the times we spend with our family and friends during this holiday time.

It can be attending the performances of Christmas plays or concerts at our school.

It can be going to church to hear the Christmas message.

It can be taking stock of all of our blessings and joys.

Memories are made of people and things, of times past and times to come.

It can be found in the traditions that surround this time of year -- the tree, the candle, the worship. The list is endless and varied, depending on our history.

For some, it may be that special moment with a loved one.

The annual trip to see the grandparents or parents can create a magical family bonding time.

For others, it may be that one special toy or gift we received when we were young.

And for still others, it can be the gifts of thanks and of sharing and of fellowship, manifesting in the ways we give of our time and finances to our church or our favorite charity.

We're reminded that as we get older, our joys shift. It's not so much what we look forward to receiving but what we give and the reactions of those dear to us -- our children, our parents, our family, our friends and our neighbors.

There is not much that can surpass the look on a child's face when Christmas day arrives or when they are sharing their experiences of the divine birth at church.

That same look can be found on those who volunteer. People all across the country, from churches to community and civic groups and organizations, donate their time to serve others.

Every year, people come together to prepare holiday meals for those less fortunate.

There are those who go to great efforts to collect and distribute toys and clothing to others.

Here again, few impressions are as lasting or as meaningful as witnessing such events.

All of these images are part of Christmas and what makes the holidays so special for so many.

Christmas doesn't have to come just once a year. It can come year round, and often does, when the joy of giving and sharing takes hold.
