Nevada swim team captures conference crown

Nevada High School's swim team captured the conference title in its first year of membership in the West Central Conference.

"This was our first experience with the conference," said the team's coach, Amyl Bishop.

"Our girls knew that the competition for conference champions would be close between Warrensburg and Nevada. The girls definitely brought their A game!

"We swam at the Springfield Invitational last Saturday, and most of the girls swam their best times! I wasn't expecting that, but they were wearing their tech suits, and the competition was state level!

"We are used to swimming against the fastest teams in the state. Glendale hosts the Springfield Invitational, and they are the number one team in the state.

"Needless to say, our girls can swim their heart out and still place in the teens at some of these grand meets. That being said, the depth of our team this year is incredibly deep. Our B relays can hold their own this year. Our 200 Free B relay is swimming as fast as the A relay was at the start of the season.

"We do compete against teams like Carthage, Joplin, and Webb City with teams more similar to ours, with a few state qualifiers; and we have placed in the top three at those meets! It helps to have that depth of quality!

"So, for us to swim against our conference for the first time, knowing we had a chance to secure a conference win, the excitement was tangible.

"We started off a little jittery, but as we swam, swimmers with best times were dropping even more time.

"I truly believe it was a combination of excitement, and sheer competitiveness...we wanted to win! Win we did! The night couldn't have gone any better!

"Sophomore Mikayla Mohrmann, a 2014 state competitor in the 200 free relay, commented, "Competing in this meet may have been more fun than state. Actually it was more fun than state.

"At the conference meet, we were working together as a team. We were all there together, cheering each other on; working as a team to win that title!

"What a great night! What a great way to enter the conference!"
