Edgar Allan Poe coming to Cottey Friday, Saturday
Nevada Daily Mail
The Cottey College Theatre Department presents "Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe" Friday and Saturday, at 8 p.m., in the auditorium of the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts.
According to a press release from the college, "Edgar Allan Poe stands alone in the flickering darkness of his mind, trying desperately to convince himself -- and us -- that he's not mad. The spell he weaves brings us a highly theatrical adaptation of four tales Poe himself considered his best: 'The Raven,' 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Pit and the Pendulum,' and 'The Tell-Tale Heart.' Enter the world of Poe and check your heartbeat.
"This production is sure to entice audience members with its highly stylized steampunk design."
According to Wikipedia, steampunk began as a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy literature, but has become a craft and lifestyle movement that commonly features some aspect of steam-powered machinery. Steampunk is often inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West" in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.
There will be a door prize for the first 100 visitors Friday night and a "Saturday Steampunk" night in which the audience is invited to dress in their best steampunk apparel.
Audience members may then enter the contest to be voted on at the end of the show. One grand prize will be awarded for the best costume.
The Center for the Arts is on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada.
