Sheldon school board updated on data breach

Superintendent Tim Judd told the Sheldon R-8 school board during its meeting Wednesday, that the school's health insurance provider, Anthem, experienced a cyber-attack recently, which may have compromised employees' personal information.
Judd said it is possible information including names, birthdays, addresses, social security numbers and employment information could be at risk. Anthem will contact affected members through the U.S. Postal Service.
Sheldon High School principal Jason Irwin updated the board on the Sheldon basketball teams' participation in the conference tournament this week. Irwin said the elementary basketball teams have their first games Feb. 20, against Northeast Vernon County.
Irwin also reported on students' participation in a Future Business Leaders of America district competition held this week. Beth Spencer placed first in the competition, Amy Brzuchowski placed third and C.J. Curry, fourth. Their achievements earned them places in the upcoming state competition.
Irwin said both junior high and high school LifeSmarts teams qualified for state competition in Jefferson City. The younger team will compete on Feb. 24, while the high school team competes on Feb. 25.
The names of three candidates for the school board positions up for election this spring were announced at the meeting as well. Incumbent Michelle Claflin will run again as will newcomers Marlene Moran and Cody Claflin.
Elementary principal Carolyn Compton told the board the elementary students will celebrate Dr. Seuss Week the first week of March, holding special emphasis days when students can dress up and participate in classroom activities.
