NHS kicks off track season with annual Invite

Nevada High School is slated to host its 17th Annual Track and Field Invitational Saturday morning at the NHS track.
Nevada track and field head coach Robert Watts said he was hopeful the community would come out to support the event, adding that admission is free.
"We would love to have everybody here," Watts said. "Hope the weather is nice, and I hope we have some good competition."
The Tigers boast a roster featuring 31 upperclassmen.
"I think we're going to be very competitive with the schools our size and a little bit bigger," Watts said.
Watts said he anticipates competition being stiffer this year.
"It's going to be difficult when we get to district, because they've changed to five districts this year," Watts said of the district setup, which was six a year ago. "So now Carthage, Branson and others are back in our district."
The NHS Invitational began in 1999, Watts first year as the Tigers track and field head coach.
"Not a lot of people like to do the Saturday track meets anymore," Watts said. "But we have both varsity and junior varsity that come. So its one of the few meets, maybe the only meet, where schools can bring everybody, and everybody can participate."
Watts said Saturday's track events include the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes; 4-by-800, 4-by-400, 4-by-200, and 4-by-100 relays; the 800 run, 1-mile, and 2-mile run, 100, 110, and 300 meter hurdles.
The field events include the shot put, discus throw, long-jump, triple-jump, pole vault, and high-jump.
For Nevada, juniors Chaden Brandt and Reagan Bradley are returning state-qualifiers, while senior Brooklynn Vincent narrowly missed qualifying for state.
"We have quite a few upperclassmen who are out for the first time," Watts said. "So it will be nice to get an actual stop-watch on them, and see where they are."
The Tigers have been practicing since March 1.
"The practices have looked really good," Watts said. "The kids are taking to our program, and working through the workouts."
