A Nevada native will return to his hometown in the next couple months after spending the past four years in Fort Worth and the six years before then at school in Kansas City.

After completing his medical education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus in 2011, Dr. Ben Wilson began his residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. But recently he was given the opportunity to move back to Nevada, where his parents still live and where he will work with the Nevada Regional Medical Center at its area clinics.

"We decided we want to be closer to the family," Wilson said the decision for his family, which includes his wife Krysten, also of Missouri, and their 9-month-old daughter Lily.

Wilson said he first became interested in the field of medicine while still in Nevada when he was able to shadow a doctor for a summer.

"I really liked it," Wilson said of that experience, which led him to UMKC's medical program.

Wilson received further experience in Fort Worth when he worked at a family practice for about three years and even helped provide sports medicine for athletics programs at high schools and the Texas Christian University, saying he especially enjoyed that opportunity.

"That's probably been my best experience," Wilson said, saying that opportunity led to his desire to further pursue that area of medicine and that he now looks forward to bringing that knowledge to Nevada.

Upon returning to Nevada and beginning his work at NRMC July 10, Wilson will be the medical director for its three rural clinics, the Now Clinic, as well as clinics in Sheldon and Rich Hill. He will also use his knowledge in sports medicine to assist athletics programs at local high schools and colleges. Chief Executive Officer Kevin Leeper said NRMC plans to further develop the hospital's practice in that area of medicine with Wilson's help.

"We are of course very excited to be bringing a home-grown doctor back to Nevada," Leeper said. "Dr. Wilson's interests will be a real plus in growing both our orthopedic service line as well as our primary care services."

Wilson said he enjoyed the work he did in the Fort Worth area, but looks forward to moving back to Nevada and beginning his career.

"[It is] the first time I'll be my own doctor, which will be exciting," Wilson said of coming to NRMC and the opportunities it provides. "I'm ready to get back into some things that I wasn't able to do down there."

Leeper added they feel privileged that Wilson will be joining their team, and that it is a great testimony to the City of Nevada that the Wilsons want to raise their family here.
