After working in the Vernon County Commission's office for the past 15 years under four different presiding county commissioners, Gail Wysong will retire from her position as secretary at the end of the month.
To honor those years she has served the county, a reception will be held for Wysong today at 2 p.m., outside the commissioners' office in the Vernon County Courthouse. Members of the community are invited to attend.
"Gail is a sweetheart," said county collector and treasurer Phil Couch, adding she is one of the nicest people he has ever had the opportunity to work with. "She's just a joy to be around."
With her retirement, Wysong said she would be able to spend more time with her family as well as her church, First Christian Church.
"It's been a real pleasure to work with Gail," northern commissioner Neal Gerster said. "She's a real sweet lady."
Gerster said they will have a difficult time replacing Wysong after her final day July 31. Wysong documented the minutes for the commission, writing in shorthand, and handled other responsibilities for the commission,
"We can't imagine doing it without her," Gerster said, saying training her replacement will be a task after she did it for so long.
A Nevada High School graduate, Wysong has held secretarial positions around the state as well as in neighboring states for about 65 years, since her 1948 high school graduation -- except for a two-year retirement before beginning work for Vernon County. Wysong worked for a variety of companies ranging from law firms to medical centers to American Airlines.
During that span of time, Wysong has gone from typing on manual typewriters to the computer technology used currently. Over the years, she has also survived three bouts with cancer and has been cancer-free for the past 11 years, though she currently suffers from arthritis and has experienced deterioration in her eyesight.
"I've been blessed with good working conditions and good people," Wysong said in an interview earlier this year. "I enjoy the people and I enjoy my bosses, they've all been great."
