Through her community service project, Nevada High School standout athlete Carsten Warner is raising awareness and money for pediatric cancer. Warner's project "Kick Cancer," will take place at Logan Field just prior to and during Nevada's home football against Aurora, Friday at 7 p.m.
Warner, an NHS senior, has accepted a scholarship to play softball for Division I Missouri State University in Springfield, and plans on pursuing a career as a pediatrician.
"This is a service project for my action class," Warner said. "The opportunity came up, and I really like helping kids and I jumped on it. "We're going to have a pass the bucket at halftime of Friday's game, and if anybody wants to donate it's going to a really good cause.'
As part of her project, Warner said the school district is also holding a Pajama Day. Warner she thought of the idea after reading information from the American Childhood Cancer Organization's website. The proceeds raised by Warner through her project will to the ACCO.
"A lot of kids when they have cancer have to spend a lot of time in their pajamas at home," Warner said. "So we're just kind of doing that for them.
Warner said she's hopeful everyone will participate in PJ Day, including teachers. Warner has already raised more the $500 selling T-shirts related to her project. In addition, Warner will have a table set up near the Logan Field concession stands, Friday, where she will be selling cupcakes to further raise money for the cause.
"I'm hoping to keep on adding on to the money I've already raised ---- as much as I can get," she said.
