Hume teams topple Sheldon in GVVC matchups

Host Hume swept rival Sheldon Thursday night in basketball, with the Hornet girls prevailing 45-23 and the Hornet boys rolling 50-29.
In the girls' game, Hume built a 13-7 lead at the first break and continued to add to that advantage, taking an 11-4 edge in the second period for a 24-11 halftime difference.
Brhett Mumma and Kaiyah Kaiser each had six points at the break to pace the hosts.
Alycia Baney's four paced the Panthers.
Hume padded its lead to 38-15 at the end of the third with a 14-4 difference in the period. Lady Hornet Megan Sutcliffe dropped in six points from the inside and one for charity stripe to account for half of her team's scoring.
In the fourth frame, senior Panther Logan Lamb connected for eight points and Sheldon won the period by a point.
Lamb finished with 12 of her team's points, including the games only 3-pointer. Sophomore Alycia Baney contributed seven, with Leah Bogart adding two and Sabrina Nance one.
Hume senior Brhett Mumma produced 14 points to fuel the home team. Megan Sutcliffe contributed 11 and sophomore Kaiyah Kaiser 10. Hannah Swickhamer netted five, Anna Spencer and Hannah Gorda two each, and Emmah Fillpot one.
In the boys' game, Hume put seven on the board before Sheldon could answer and the hosts went on to end the first quarter up 14-4.
The visitors managed just two made baskets in the second period while Hume was continuing to pull away.
That led to a 14-6 difference and a 28-10 halftime difference.
Dakota Thornburg led with 11 points at intermission for the Hornets, with three different players scoring for the Panthers.

Sheldon rallied for six in the third, while holding Hume to only four, for a 32-16 margin with one quarter remaining.
The Panthers finally found their tempo in the fourth, bringing in 13 points, but Hume also enjoyed its best period of the game, dropping in 18, to win going away.
Hume senior Dakota Thornburg led all scorers with 22 points. Freshman Kolby Steuk chipped in 10. Tyler Clark netted nine, Ryan Reno five and Blake Lewis four.
Sheldon sophomore Zavery Lamb led his squad with 14 points. Kaleb Martin, a junior, added eight, including a pair of 3's in the fourth period. Brett O'Connor contributed four and Jason Leavell three.
Sheldon's varsity teams are on the road at Golden City, today, for a 5:30 p.m. start.
Hume will again defend home court against the Appleton City Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m., tonight.
