Cold shooting dooms Comets against Greyhounds

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

The Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds romped to a 90-55 victory over the Cottey Comets Saturday afternoon in Nevada.

The Comets are now 3-6 overall and have dropped four consecutive contests. The Comets had previously defeated FSCC 80-78 Nov. 20 at the Gladbach Classic in Fort Scott.

Against FSCC Saturday, Cottey was without 33 percent of its roster as four Comets did not dress out for reasons head coach Stephanie Beason declined to elaborate on.

"I have zero comments about any of it," Beason said Monday afternoon. "There will be more that will come out later."

Without floor general Dejanae Wilson, the Comets looked lost offensively, settling for 3-point attempts most of the afternoon. Cottey shot 14 percent from beyond the arc, connecting on only 4-of-28 attempts. FSCC knocked down 10-of-26 from three-point land as Kamiron Luptak and Alexis Byrnes combined to go 7-of-12.

The Comets hung around early, with Sydney Rose tying the game 8-8 after knocking down a triple from the left-wing with 7:01 to play in the first quarter. The Comets then grabbed a 10-8 lead with shooting guard Latasha Griggs driving lay-up.

The Greyhounds reclaimed the lead when Tabor Spurling finished in the paint and was sent to the line where she completed the and-1, giving FSCC an 11-10 lead. A Rose basket off the right-block put the Comets on top 12-11. The Greyhounds nearly closed the quarter out on a 9-0 run, however, a foul at the first quarter horn allowed Destany Ross to knock down a pair of free throws as FSCC led 20-14.

Early in the second quarter Luptak corralled an offensive rebound and went up for the bucket to extend the Greyhounds lead to eight. FSCC's lead grew to 29-14 courtesy of a Kayleigh Haggard mid-range jumper, followed by a Lillie Holtgrove trey from the right-wing, and then Kalynn Iseman's offensive rebound and putback. Rose scored on back-to-back possessions cut FSCC's lead to 29-18.

Late in the second quarter, a Luptak coast-to-coast lay-up put the Greyhounds in front 33-22. FSCC led 36-24 at the break.

Second half

The Greyhounds wasted little time breaking the game open as they opened the third quarter on an 8-0 mini-blitz. The run started with a Jordyn Danzler jumper from 8-feet out, and ended with a Danzler lay-in as the Greyhounds lead swelled to 20 at 44-24. Comets head coach Stephanie Beason called a time out after Danzler's layup, but that did little to slow the Greyhounds momentum.

Midway through the third quarter the Greyhounds went on an extended 17-3 run to go on top 61-27. The run started at the 6:57 mark of the third with a Byrnes 3-pointer. With 4:01 remaining in the third quarter Luptak again connected from the right-wing, putting FSCC in front 57-26.

The final points of the Greyhounds lights-out third quarter came on another Luptak three-ball, this time from the left-wing. The Greyhounds flattened the Comets 33-9 in the third quarter, to take a commanding 69-33 lead. The fourth quarter was more evenly played as Cottey outscored FSCC 22-21 for the final 35 point margin.

For FSCC, Luptak finished with a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds and an assist. Byrnes and Haggard added 15 points apiece while Danzer was the fourth Greyhond to finish in double-figures with 13 points.

For Cottey, Rose led the way with a team-high 16 points, (7-14 FG, 2-4 3Pt).
