Sheldon boys top Ballard, girls fall

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

The Sheldon Panthers varsity basketball team dealt Ballard a 51-39 defeat on Homecoming Night Friday at Sheldon.

With their second consecutive victory the Panthers improve to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Golden Valley Vernon County Conference.

"We're improving," Panthers head coach Tyler Judd said. "We're going through some growing pains with a young team and will get better as the season goes on."

For Sheldon, Zavey Lamb finished with a game-high 13 points while Kaleb Martin contributed 10.

Panthers injury

Panthers starting shooting guard, senior George Shelton, suffered a broken leg Jan. 5 during Sheldon's road contest at Miami, ending his season.

"George's defense and energy was really contagious, so we will have to replace that," Judd said. "We need guys to step up and match his energy. George was also a good shooter and spaced the floor well."

Judd said he has tweaked his lineup to compensate for the loss of Shelton.

"This creates an opportunity for somebody else to step up," he said.

Judd said freshman Matt Bogart has a high ceiling, and will rotate into the starting lineup.

'We will play Matt at the three or four, and move Kaleb Martin to shooting guard," Judd said.

Lady Panthers

The Lady Panthers fell Friday evening to Ballard 45-22. The Lady Panthers are 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the GVVC.

Up next

The Panthers are slated to participate in the Golden City Tournament, Jan. 11-16. The Lady Panthers next hit the court Jan. 19 at NEVC.
