Hume earns road-sweep of Sheldon

A strong second half performance propelled the Hume Hornets basketball team to a 47-30 victory over the Sheldon Panthers, Thursday night in Sheldon.

Meanwhile, the Hume Lady Hornets improved to 11-3 overall after defeating the Sheldon Lady Panthers 65-26.

In the boys game, Hume led 21-20 at halftime. After outscoring Sheldon 11-7 in the third quarter, the Hornets lead increased to 32-27 entering the fourth quarter. The Hornets kicked it into high gear in the final frame, outscoring the Panthers 15-3 for the final 17-point margin.

"Early foul trouble had us out-of-sink in the first half," Hornets head coach Justin Wehar said. "We played smarter and harder in the second half and did a good of sharing the ball. And our second half defense was much better."

For Hume, Dakota Thornburg scored a team-high 15 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Thornburg also drilled two 3-pointers. Hume freshman Kolby Steuck tallied 10 points, seven steals, five rebounds and three assists, while knocking down two treys.

Additionally for the Hornets, Chris Aherns ended the night with six points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists; Tyler Clark six points and an assist; Ryan Reno five points and four rebounds; and Blake Lewis five points, three rebounds and an assist.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 8-5 overall.

For Sheldon, Matt Bogart went for a game-high 18 points, including 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Freshman Clayton Lloyd totaled five points, Kaleb Martin four, and Brett O'Connor three.

In the girls game, the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 21-3 first quarter lead, and took a 20-point lead into the halftime break.

The Lady Hornets lead swelled to 32 after Sheldon was outscored 20-8 in the third quarter, as Hume cruised to the comfortable victory.

The Lady Hornets were led by senior point guard Brhett Mumma, who dropped in 24 points while dishing out 12 assists. Mumma's near-triple double haul also included nine rebounds, three steals, and a block. Hannah Gorda added 14 points, two rebounds, two steals and a block; Megan Sutcliffe 12 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals; Hannah Swickhamer seven points, two steals, two rebounds and two assists; Emma Fillpot four points, two rebounds and a steal; Katlyn Brooks two points, two steals, two assists, a rebound and a block; Anna Spencer two points and three rebounds; Malia McFrederick three rebounds and three assists; and Karlee Metcalf three rebounds and an assist.

For the Lady Panthers, Alycia Baney contributed 10 points, Logan Lamb eight, Sabrina Nance four, while Kylie Leavell and Lindsey Turner chipped in with two points apiece.
