Large crowd attends fifth annual FFA auction

The Nevada R-5 chapter of Future Farmers of America held their fifth annual auction this past Saturday at the Vernon County Fairgrounds.
According to FFA secretary Paxton Dahmer, the annual auction supports the FFA booster club, which in turn sponsors FFA events and scholarships. Exact numbers for the 2016 auction are not available yet, but in 2015, the FFA brought in $2,000.
In conjunction with the auction, FFA members operated a concession stand to raise money to send chapter members to the Washington Leadership Conference this summer in Washington, D.C. Dahmer said the week long trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity for FFA members to learn leadership skills. The trip costs $1,250 per person and Nevada has between 15 and 20 members planning to go this summer.
In regards to the auction, Dahmer said that the FFA chapter earns a 10 percent commission on all items sold with a $200 per item cap.
FFA president Kaylee Farmer has already had the opportunity to attend the leadership conference, and was also a member of the livestock judging team that travelled to Scotland last summer.
Farmer said the trip is more conference than sightseeing although there are opportunities to be a tourist at places like the White House, and the Washington Monument. The trip is organized around a number of leadership oriented presentations and breakout sessions.
Farmer liked the experience of the city, the Metro (subway), and getting to meet and network with other FFA members from across the U.S. She is attending college next year on a livestock judging scholarship though she is undecided as to where.

Currently the Nevada R-5 FFA has approximately 85 members and will be hosting more events this spring to raise money for the WLC trip this summer.
