'Leonette's Legacy' to help Girl Scouts attend camp
Nevada Daily Mail
The family of Leonette Hammontree and the Nevada Girl Scouts are announcing arrangements have been made to have funds available to assist Girl Scouts who are trying to earn money to attend camp. The monies received and overseen by the Girl Scout organization will be known as "Leonette's Legacy."
"We have wanted to create some type of supportive effort ever since her death and the idea of assisting young Girl Scouts with camp fees just felt right. We remember how Leonette loved to attend Camp Mintahama near Joplin several weeks each year as a Girl Scout," her parents said. "We feel she would be thrilled with this effort."
Leonette was still a member of the Girl Scout organization as a leader when she was killed in a motorcycle accident on May 19, 2014, west of Nevada.
"Seeing the Scouts currently selling their cookies reminded us of how tough it was every year to sell enough for Leonette to go to camp. But we felt she learned many things through the effort of selling cookies," her parents stated. "Things that created the strong woman she was and one not afraid to take on other challenging efforts through life -- such as Relay For Life, Girl Scout Leadership, and Child's Mercy Hospital/Eagle fund raisers.
'"Leonette's Legacy' will assist Girl Scouts who have put forth the effort to earn the money for camp, but have just came up a little short," the family said. The first camp the Nevada Girl Scouts will be attending this year will be in May, just before the 19.
If anyone wants to join this endeavor, forward donations made out to Nevada Girl Scouts and send to Leon & Linda Chesnut, 1710 N. Washington, Nevada, Mo., 64772. Please note the donation is for "Leonette's Legacy."
The family wanted to remind everyone Girl Scouts are trying hard to sell those cookies between now and April 3.
