The municipal water system took center stage at the council meeting Wednesday evening as it has frequently in the past.

Wednesday's meeting though held good news. Following the replacement of the Housing water meter and the fixing of other leaks, monthly water loss is under 30 percent. City Clerk Erin Lee said that this is the lowest the water loss has been in years.

The water meter at the public housing complex was not leaking, but was not registering flow correctly. Each month, the meter was only counting about half of the total usage. There are still several residential meters that need to be changed.

Northeast Vernon County Elementary school will have its water meter changed over spring break.

One customer's water bill was prorated after they suffered a leak while out of town over a weekend. The leak has been fixed by the customer and the council approved prorating their water bill.

In other news, someone has been driving in the Baptist Church's yard to get into the alley behind the church. The culvert for the alley collapsed, and was removed years ago. A new culvert in compliance with city code will cost approximately $370 installed. The council approved installation of the culvert.

Lastly, much discussion was devoted to the dilapidated buildings south of the community center. Several are in poor repair or even dangerous, and at least one wall has collapsed out onto the sidewalk. The council discussed options for grants to both remove the old buildings and to restore the ground for community use.

The council approved a motion to contact legal counsel to begin proceedings in getting dangerous buildings removed.
