March is Red Cross Month and the American Red Cross honors those who donate blood and platelets, organize blood drives and volunteer in communities across the country. These everyday heroes are the face of the Red Cross and help save lives.

Since 1943, every president has designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how the Red Cross and its supporters help people down the street and across the country.

The employees at Archer Daniels Midland in Deerfield hosted their 17th American Red Cross Blood Mobile March 9. There were 22 units collected to help with need.

The Red Cross must collect approximately 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day for the patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. Blood and platelets are needed to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease.
