Hume's Thornburg blanks Miami

Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Hume Hornets senior starting pitcher, Dakota Thornburg, tossed a 2-hit complete game shutout March 23 against Miami, lifting Hume to a 4-0 victory.

The win was the Hornets first of the season, as they improved to 1-1.

"It was great to get a win tonight and see the excitement from the boys," Hornets head coach Justin Wehar said.

Hume jumped on top early, plating a run in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. The Hornets big inning came in the top of the third, when they tacked on three runs to go in front 4-0.

For the seven inning contest, Hume collected seven hits. Leadoff hitter Tyler Clark was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while two-hole hitter Kolby Steuck was the only other Hornet with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Additionally for Hume, Ryan Reno and Josh Hyder each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

"We didn't hit the ball great," Wehar said, "but we put together enough hits in a row to put some runs on the scoreboard."

On the mound Thornburg was masterful, racking up 14 strikeouts.

"Dakota did a great job pitching for us," Wehar said, "throwing a 2-hit shutout."
