Tiger golf team notches first-place at home match

The Nevada Tigers golf team continued its hot start to the season, winning its second golf event in as many tries.
The Tigers most recent victory came Tuesday at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course, as the Tigers defeated visiting El Dorado Springs High School and Fort Scott (Kan.) High School.
Battling wind gusts of 35 miles per hour, the Tigers coasted to victory, posting an overall team score of 153. Fort Scott place second, finishing 42 strokes back with a score of 195, while, El Do finished a distant third with a team score of 249.
"It's always a good feeling to win your home matches," Nevada golf coach Brian Leonard said. "It's also a good feeling to win your first home outing."
For Nevada, junior John Quitno carded the low individual score, shooting an even-par 36 on the back-nine. Leonard said he was pleased with Quitno's performance, after battling the elements for a second consecutive match.
"He missed some greens," Leonard said, "so coming in at even-par like that is really fantastic, especially with this wind."
Nevada junior Patrick Ferry recorded the second best score at 2-over par 38.
"Patrick was struggling on the greens putting," Leonard said. "But I was still very pleased with his 2-over. He got a little frustrated on a couple of greens missing some putts, but he was able to fight through it."
Nevada's Levi Palmer netted the third-best individual score at 3-over par 39.
"Levi started off with a 3-putt on the first green and battled back from that," Leonard said.
Tigers junior Jacob Hammontree slotted into fourth-place, with a score of 4-over par 40.
"Everybody was 4-under or better, and that's going to win a lot of matches," Leonard said. "We have to improve on the little mistakes, like the short putts they were missing for par."
Additionally, Leonard said his squad will look to improve in its short-game.
"We have to work on some good course management skills," he said. "I noticed tonight that they were getting too close to the greens on their drives, and then struggling with their approach shots."
Up next
The Tigers travel to Briarbrook Golf Course in Carl Junction, today, for the Webb City Bird Dog Invitational, where Nevada will look to replicate its 2015 first-place finish.
The Bird Dog Invitational is a 36-hole event.
"If we can get a team-score of 320 or less ----that's kind of what we're looking at to win."
The Tigers schedule is loaded with events over the next two weeks.
"The upcoming tournaments will show us what we're made of, and if we can compete against the bigger schools," Leonard said.
