Walton Family Aquatic Center to open Monday

The pool should be ready to open on Monday, weather permitting, Dana Redburn, Nevada parks and recreation director told the park board during its Wednesday meeting.
Redburn told the board there have been a lot of issues getting the pool ready to open this year.
The biggest issue is with the light poles on the east and west end of the pool that are leaning.
"We can get to the east lights to fix them. But we will still have an issue with the ones on the west side," she said.
She said the opinion of an electrician who looked at the lights is they were incorrectly installed and they have started to lean.
"My fear is that if they were to blow over, we would have a catastrophe at the pool. And the weather has not cooperated," she said.
All of the rain has made it difficult to get equipment in place to lift the current poles and reset them in a different location.
Redburn said there is a possible alternative solution. There is a type of anchor bolt available that uses an epoxy to anchor the bolts in the concrete that are supposed to be safe and useable for a long-term installation.
However, she told the board that she is not certain of the safety of this process, and does not want to trust it.
Redburn said that while it looked promising to be able to relocate the light poles, if they cannot fix them, they would delay the opening of the pool.
She told the board that for the 2017 summer, there will be a new rule at the pool that will require anyone who is less than 48 inches tall and cannot pass a swimming test to wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket in the pool area.
This summer, this will be optional, and parents can bring their own Coast Guard approved life jacket.
Currently before a child can go down the water slide they must pass a swimming test.
"Hopefully this increase the use of the swim lessons," Redburn said.
She said they are going to change the current swim lessons to include more time in the pool learning skills.
"Parents want their kids to learn swimming skills," she said.
