Ketterman named as Tigers 2016 MVP
The Nevada Tigers baseball team was honored Thursday evening at Nevada High School, with various awards being presented and handed out by the school's varsity, junior varsity and freshman coaches ---- Danny Penn, Kyle Talley, Eric Cameron, and Jake Stevenson.
Winning the Tigers 2016 Most Valuable Player Award (as voted on by team members), was junior Tyler Ketterman. In addition, Ketterman won the team's Offensive Player of the Year Award.
Ketterman, a shortstop, pitcher, and catcher, finished the season with a .459 batting average, a program record 10 triples, seven doubles, two home runs, 16 RBIs, and 34 runs scored. Ketterman was also 15 of 18 in stolen base attempts.
Defensively, Ketterman had a .916 fielding percentage and threw out five of seven base runners. On the mound, Ketterman finished the season with a 2.60 earned run average over 32 varsity innings pitched.
Winning the team's defensive MVP was senior Brett Mitchell. Mitchell gunned down 10 of 21 potential base stealers, and finished the year with a .973 fielding percentage.
Winning the Pitcher of the Year Award was senior Derek O'Dell, who finished the year 3-2 with a 2.11 earned run average over 36 1/3 varsity innings pitched. Other awards included, Jarrett Owen, the winner of the Tiger award, for always going the extra mile and doing all the little things; Most Improved Freshman, Joe Hendrix; Freshman of the Year, Will Johnson; Most Improved Player, Myles Miller; and Rookie of the Year, sophomore Logan Armstrong. In edition to presenting the awards, Nevada head coach Danny Penn discussed the highlights of the season, which included a 6-5 11 inning victory over the Sherwood Marksmen, a victory over district champion Monett, courtesy of a game-winning walk-off RBI from senior Trey Pritchett, and a win against the Pittsburg (Kan.)
