Later this year, KCP&L is publishing its first calendar on electrical safety and included among its pictures will be a drawing by 11-year-old Maci Yount, of Bronaugh. Open to children under age 12, the 16 winners of this coloring contest were selected by a public vote on KCP&L's Facebook page.

Maci's picture expresses the theme, "make sure power cords are tucked away to prevent falls." Besides being featured in the September 2016-December 2017 calendar, Maci will receive a $50 Visa gift card, several copies of the calendar and a letter of congratulations.

"When my mom told me I won I first said, 'Really?' and then a little later I started to cry because I was so happy," said Maci.

Maci's mom, Keri Yount, came across the coloring contest on KCP&L's Facebook page.

"I told all three of my children about the contest and urged them to enter," said Keri. "Our middle child, Hunter, said he wasn't interested but Maci and Trevor both produced a drawing."

Possible themes to illustrate were included on the Facebook page.

"I looked at the themes, got my markers and started drawing," said Maci.

Keri learned of the contest in May and submitted her children's artwork by month's end. Submissions were posted by KCP&L online for a public vote.

When asked about her plans for the gift card Maci gave three responses.

First she said, "I'm going to put it away towards my own car."

Then she said, "I'll ask mom if we can go shopping and I'll use it at the mall."

But it was her final answer that was rather surprising.

"There's an old gas station here in Bronaugh that's been closed for years," said Maci. "Someday, I want to buy it, fix it up, and put a cafe right next to it. I'd like to own both and run the cafe."

When asked why this was her dream Maci said, "Because we don't have either of those right now and it would really help the people of this town."

"You got to understand that we've got a lot of family here," said Corey. "I think Maci's seen how our family's always talking about volunteering to help make this town better and it has rubbed off on her."

Corey is a member of the Bronaugh R-7 school board and serves as a volunteer firefighter and first responder. Maci's grandfather, Terry Fleener is an alderman in Bronaugh while Maci's maternal aunt is Lori Conner, Bronaugh's city clerk.

In a press release, Derek Bell, KCP&L senior director of Corporate Safety said, "Finding new ways for our customers to learn about safety is always priority, that's why we launched our first annual Safety Coloring Contest."

Commenting on her submission, Bell said "Maci's picture is colorful and imaginative, which makes it engaging and informative for all ages."

When asked for a reaction by her brothers and encouraged by mom to say something nice, younger brother Trevor said, "She's nice to me," while older brother Hunter added, "She's good at drawing."

Maci returned the compliments by saying of Trevor, "He helps me clean my room," and of her older brother, "Hunter helps me with my math homework."

When asked if Maci has won anything before, Maci said, "I won the fifth-grade spelling bee in our school and got to represent Bronaugh at the spelling bee in Joplin. I also won the young authors contest for my class and was selected to go to the special program they had in Nevada. It was really great!"

It was at this point that Corey looked over those gathered round the table and remarked, "Here's my father's day gift: my family."
