Schowe-N-Shine Auto Show and Barbecue Contest a success
Dear Editor:
The 10th Annual Schowe-N-Shine Auto Show and Barbeque Contest went off without a hitch on Saturday, May 21. The weather was beautiful, the food was plentiful and the vehicles were GORGEOUS!
We had a total of 60 vehicles exhibited from around the area. The Best in Show winner was a 1929 Franklin V-12, air cooled Touring Car. Built in Syracuse, N.Y., it has spent most of its life in Southern California before coming to Missouri about a year ago. Owners Dennis and Linda Redford, Montrose, are very proud of their unique vehicle. The People's Choice Award went to a red 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS, owned by Johnny Maslem, El Dorado Springs.
Thirty other exhibitors received trophies for their vehicles. The barbecue competition winner for the second year in a row was First Christian Church, Nevada. They received a three-tiered trophy with a barbecue grill on it! How fitting! More than 300 people were served meals and then were able to vote for their favorite grill master. We appreciate the Cowboy Church fielding two teams, First United Methodist Church, Nevada, and the Schell City Christian Church who also fielded teams. Thank you all!
Mike Kershner from Pittsburg, Kan., supplied our DJ and announcing services for the day. Thanks Mike! Pat and Frank Arnold (Pat's Designs) produced Tee Shirts on site for our exhibitors and patrons. Thanks Pat and Frank! Bob McElwain, Ray's Trophies, produced our dash plaques and awards. Thanks Bob!
Sponsors for the Schowe-N-Shine event greatly helped us! Wes Knell and his staff at State Farm Insurance knocked it out of the park again this year! Wes makes contact with other vendors and sponsors on our behalf. Thanks so much for all the work you do, Wes! National TV Sales and Rental for the sixth year in a row donated a new washer and dryer for the next Habitat Home Build. Corporate Said No, but manager Pam said YES! Thank you so much! Corey Johnson, CMJ Financial and Brent Mendenhall, Del Way, again returned as corporate sponsors. New this year was Cross Roads Sales and Service who also did an equipment display the day of the show.
Our live auction featured items from Los Sauces, It works, Beth Stewart, 54 Feed and Seed, Sharkey's, Sonic, Sutherlands, Subway, Gobbler's Roost, Brooke Longstreth, Scentsy, Back Roads Steak House and Harbor Freight. Thank you all!
At the end of the day we raised $6,070.25 from the Schowe-N-Shine for the Nevada Area Habitat for Humanity.
Through the end of this 10th year event, we have raised more $51,000 for our Nevada Chapter. They completed the build on house No. 14 this May and will begin house No. 15 this June.
All of this would not be possible without the hard work of the Habitat Board and their volunteers. A special thanks to Roger and Tammi Beach, Dana Redburn, Terry Hahnfeld, Bob Burns and Jeanette Hawkins. To our staff, Teresa McCoy, Emily Martin, Brandi Todd, and Jami Dipman. Thank you so much! We appreciate all the hard work you do before, during and after the event.
See you next year, Saturday, May 20, 2017 for Schowe-N-Shine No. 11.
