Cottey VB bests Ozark

The Cottey Comets volleyball team picked up a straight-set 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Ozark Christian College, Tuesday night in Joplin.

The win improves Cottey to 5-4 overall.

"I am real pleased with the way that we are progressing," Comets coach Marla Kannady-Foreman said. "They are realizing they no longer have to be the underdog."

Kannady-Foreman said she was pleases with her squad's competitiveness.

"We still must learn to stay focused regardless of the score," she noted. "By the third set, we got a little lax in our play. But after a time out and pep talk, they picked it up greatly."

Cottey was led by sophomore Melanie Dillon, who notched a team-high 17 assists, to go along with nine kills, eight digs, and a block, while connecting on 61 percent of her kills.

Ann Lispcomb recorded five aces, followed by Reita Andrew with four and Sara Marshall with one. Freshman Maddy Hidbon chipped in with a team-high 11 digs, while Lipscomb added eight.

Tabitha Jackson came up with two blocks, while Lipscomb, Hidbon, and Lily Brockus collected one apiece. Along with Dillon, Lipscomb had nine kills, Jackson six and Hidbon four.

As a team, Cottey averaged just over 10 kills a game, tallying 31; had five players record at least one block; had six players get in the assist column; committed only four serving errors and seven serve-receive errors; netted 10 aces; and stayed above 14 percent hitting in all three sets (28 percent, 18 percent, and 16 percent).
