It was another successful outing for the Nevada Tiger and Lady Tigers cross country teams at the recent Lamar Cross Country Invitational.

For Nevada, the Lady Tigers varsity team earned a runner-up finish, the junior varsity girls fifth place; the junior varsity boys 19th place; and the varsity boys 45th place. The Nevada Middle School boys and girls were also on hand for the event.

Nevada's highest individual finish was freshman Calli Beshore's second-place finish in the girls 5-kilometer event.

"At the meet, we competed against nearly 20 of some of the best schools from southwest Missouri," NHS cross country coach Ryan Watts said. "It was a very tough meet with some quality runners."

Watts said that the meet featured some of the fastest runners his squad has competed against this season.

"We ran very well," he said. "Our middle school team, which 10 of our 11 (runners) are seventh-graders, who ran very well. Competing against eighth-graders in combined races is a very tall order because so much growth happens in that year that it makes a huge difference. But our kids held their own."

Watts continued, "In fact, both in middle school, junior varsity and varsity, almost all of our runners ran at or better than their best times of the season, which was very exciting to see.

"Our varsity girls ran an awesome team race with our top five runners all medaling. The varsity girls brought home another second place plaque."

Watts said his varsity girls team nearly took first place.

"We were narrowly edged out by a Holden (High School) team that is as tough as you will find," a pleased Watts said. "I was very excited with how we performed, as were all of our runners. It was a great day to be a Tiger runner!"
