Nevada's Asberry competes at state swim meet

Nevada High School student-athlete Jake Asberry concluded an outstanding season in the pool at the Missouri Swimming and Diving Championships (state meet) Nov. 4-5 in St. Peters, Mo.
While there, Asberry competed in the 100-yard Butterfly, placing 17th overall, and the 50-yard Freestyle, placing 34th.
Asberry's 17th place finish earned him a spot as the first alternate for the 100-yard Butterfly finals, which took place Nov. 5. Asberry did not swim in the finals.
"Jake was in prime form, setting his best time with a 54.15," Nevada High swim coach Clayton Wheeler said of the 100-yard Butterfly event.
"I feel Jake was very happy with his 100 fly time. He missed 16th place by 5/100th(s) of a second. He swam his best race of the season. I'm very proud of his achievement."
Wheeler, however, said Asberry struggled in the 50-Freestyle as he finished with a time of 22.63 .
"Jake was pretty upset about the 50 Free," Wheeler said. "What threw Jake off, was the bulkhead wall in the pool. The state meet is swam in a 50- meter long pool, and they use a moveable wall to reduce the length to 25 yards."
Wheeler further explained, "The problem was, that, the bulkhead wall does not go all the way to the bottom of the pool. Jake utilizes the contour of the pool greatly in his freestyle, and the lack of familiarity caused issues."
