Lady Tiger middle school teams topple Fort Scott

With its well-balanced attack the Nevada Lady Tigers eighth-grade "A" basketball team cruised to a 40-16 victory over Fort Scott Middle School. Tuesday's victory at Nevada Middle School improves the Lady Tigers to 5-0 overall. Nevada's "B" team fell to Fort Scott 25-19.

Nevada jumped out to a 10-0 lead, as guards Allison Bower and Abby Harder carried the early scoring load, dropping in the Lady Tigers first six points. Nevada then increased its lead to a dozen courtesy of a Kaylee Duncan breakaway lay-up.

With 3:45 remaining in the first half, a Tylin Heathman rebound and put-back lay-in gave Nevada an 18-2 cushion, as the Lady Tigers took a commanding 22-2 lead into the halftime break.

Nevada led by 26 entering the fourth quarter. Heathman put the finishing touches on the victory with a driving Euro-step lay-in to put the Lady Tigers on top 40-10.

For Nevada, Bower finished with a game-high 12 points while Brinna Ream chipped in with eight points and 12 rebounds; Heathman finished with eight; Duncan six; Rebecca Cox, four, and Harder, two.

"Brinna was excellent tonight," NMS eighth-grade coach Robert Miner said. "She was unstoppable on the boards."

Miner added that he was impressed with his squad's defensive intensity.

"We ran our three quarters court (defensive) trap extremely well tonight," he said. "We came out and did what we needed to and executed on both ends of the court."

Fort Scott's Ella Beth and Kenly Jones shared team-high scoring honors with four points apiece.

Also Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers seventh-grade "A" team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 33-15 victory over Fort Scott. Jerica Collins led they way with seven points. The NMS seventh-grade "B" team was defeated 13-6.

Webb City matchup

In a Tuesday night road contest, the Lady Tigers eighth-grade "A" basketball team was able to remain perfect with a 29-27 victory over Webb City. In addition, Nevada's "B" team prevailed 26-23.

For Nevada, Heathman finished with a team-high 10 points, while Bower and Harder finished with a half dozen points apiece. Duncan added five and Ream, two.

The Lady Tigers seventh-grade "A" team was edged Tuesday night by Webb City 24-22.

A Nevada jumper that would have tied the game, rolled off the rim as time expired.

"I'm so proud of the girls and how hard they played," Lady Tigers head coach Danny Penn said. "They played through adversity (and) scoring table errors, and never quit."

"Even though we lost, we made major strides forward," Penn said. "I'm so excited for our potential, as I see us getting better every day. They should all hold their heads high after tonight's effort."

Nevada's Claire Pritchett scored a team-high 14 points. The Lady Tigers "B" team fell 27-23. For Nevada, Jade Feller led the way with six points.

Upcoming schedule

Nevada's seventh and eighth-grade teams return to the court Monday. The Lady Tigers eighth-grade teams host Joplin South Middle School, with the "A" game tip off slated for 5:30 p.m. at Nevada Middle School.

The Lady Tigers seventh-grade teams also host Joplin South, with tip set for 5:30 p.m. at the Franklin P. Norman City-County Community Center.
