After a little bit of a slow start to the season, the Nevada Lady Tigers seventh-grade basketball team quickly thawed out, finishing the regular-season 9-3 overall.

Lady Tigers head coach Danny Penn, who has accumulated 32 victories over the past three seasons coaching junior high girl basketball, said this team has been a joy to coach.

"My group this year is still learning about the fundamentals of what it takes to be a successful basketball team," Penn said. "

The Lady Tigers enter next week's season-ending Tri-County Tournament as a 3-seed, slated to face sixth-seeded Neosho (In Carl Junction).

"I think if you look at our team right now, compared to the team that played that first game against Carthage ----it would be very apparent that we have grown by leaps and bounds," Penn said.

"And for that I am extremely proud."

"After dropping their first game of the season, followed by a 9-7 victory over El Dorado Springs its second game, Penn said at that point in time, he was unsure of what to expect the rest of the way.

"I would be lying to you if I told yo I expected to have a 9 and 3 season when we started," he said. "That's a testament to how hard the girls have worked. And how they've continued to push themselves to get better."

Penn said the slow start to the season could be attributed to early-season jitters coming out of the gate.

"I think we had a hard time of relaxing and trusting what we had been doing (in practice the three weeks leading up to the season)," he said.

Penn said the Lady Tigers are a fun group to watch, and at times get to sped up, which can hurt their play on the court.

"Often, I'm telling them to slow down and trust themselves," the sixth-ear junior high girls coach said. "We get going so fast we get ourselves out of control and don't run our plays and use the advantages we have."
