School board filing period opens

Filing for the three positions on Nevada R-5 Board of Education opened Tuesday morning and will run until Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. Each of the positions is for a three-year term.

Qualified persons wising to file for the board of education must file a Declaration of Candidacy at the R-5 District Central Office, 811 W. Hickory, Nevada.

Hours for filing will be as follows:

Dec. 13-20, 8 a.m. -- 4 p.m.

Dec. 21, 8 -11 a.m.

Dec. 22-Jan. 1, closed.

Jan. 2 -- Jan. 16, 8 a.m. -4 p.m.

Jan. 17, 8 a.m. -- 5 p.m.

Filings will not be accepted Dec. 22, 2016 through Jan. 1, 2017, weekends or days which the district is closed due to inclement weather.

Candidates for the Nevada R-5 Board of Education must be a citizen of the United States, a resident taxpayer of the district, a resident of Missouri for one year preceding the election, and 24 years of age.

Candidates for the school board are also subject to the many of the same restrictions as candidates for other offices. They must have filed all previous required campaign disclosure reports with the Missouri Ethics Committee and paid any fees assessed by the MEC.

They must be current on all state income taxes, personal property taxes, municipal taxes and real property taxes on the candidate's residence as stated on the declaration of candidacy.

Candidates must not be employees of the school district. This applies to certificated, non-certificated, full-time, part-time, and substitute employees.

All board members, whether elected or appointed, are required to complete 16 hours of training within one year of the date of election or appointment.

Board members are also expected to regularly attend and actively participate in meetings.

According to Missouri statues, Section 162.303 RSMo. "deems a board member's seat on the board vacated if he/she fails to attend three consecutive regular meetings, unless excused by the board for reasons satisfactory to the board.
