Bronaugh knocks off Hume in GVVC doubleheader

In its annual red-green Christmas game, Bronaugh bested Hume in both games of a boys-girls varsity basketball doubleheader Friday night in Hume.
The Wildcats toppled Hume 45-21 while the Lady Wildcats stung the Lady Hornets 51-22.
With the conference victories, the Lady Cats' improve to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Golden Valley Vernon County Conference, while the Bronaugh boys are now 3-5 overall (2-1 GVVC).
With its fourth straight loss, the Lady Hornets are now 4-4 overall and 3-3 in GVVC-play, while the Hornets are 0-7 overall (0-6 GVVC).
Girls contest
The Lady Wildcats came out hot, as a Bonnie Moore 3-pointer from the left wing put Bronaugh on top 9-4. The Lady Cats' then increased its advantage to 13-5 via Moore's back court steal and assist to senior Taylor Stratford for the lay-in.
With 1:38 left in the first quarter, Moore drilled her second triple of the contest to hand Bronaugh a 16-5 cushion.
A bucket from Hume guard Malia McFrederick got the Lady Hornets within single-digits as they trailed 16-7. Bronaugh, however, closed out the first quarter on a 4-0 run courtesy of a Paige Wait fast break lay-in, followed by Wait's drive-and-dish to Kailey Harrell for the score, as the Lady Wildcats led 20-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The second quarter lacked offensive fireworks, as Bronaugh outscored Hume 4-0 to take a 24-7 halftime lead.
Forward Katey Rider dropped in the Lady Cats' first four points of the second half to give Bronaugh a 19 point lead. A Hannah Swickhamer pull-up jumper with 3:16 remaining in the third made the score 28-11.
Rider, who thoroughly dominated in the paint, put Bronaugh up 34-12 with back-to-back baskets to close out the third quarter.
The final stanza featured an inordinate number of fouls, as both teams spent most of the quarter parading back-and-forth to the charity stripe.
For Bronaugh, Rider finished with a game-high 18 points, followed by Moore with 10; Stratford, 9; Wait, 6; Riley Knapp, 3; Mandy Murphy, 2; and Becca Raper, 1.
"Tonight, we played well from the start," Bronaugh head coach Daryl Dodson said. "We were able to push the ball up the floor like we've been working and were able to do some good things. I was really happy about that."
Dodson, continued, "We struggled a little bit with our press. But the girls did rotate well and we got a few steals early that helped us out to a nice lead."

Dodson said while the Lady Cats' struggled offensively in the second quarter, he was pleased that they were able to hold the Lady Hornets scoreless during the same duration.
"Our defense was able to keep them from getting back in the game," he said. "And that's one of the things we've really been emphasizing ---- that there's times where your defense has to win the game for you."
The Lady Hornets were led by Hannah Gorda with a team-high 7 points, followed by McFrederick with 5; Karlee Metcalf, 3; while Hannah Swickhamer, Kaiyah Kaiser, and Layknn Moore chipped in with two points apiece.
Boys contest
The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead courtesy of an Austin Gray offensive rebound and putback. Hume, playing with a roster of five, took its only lead of the night when senior Chris Aherns knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Hornets in front 3-2.
The Wildcats then proceeded to go on a 16-0 blitz, as 6-foot-7 senior forward Tyler Strunk showed off his versatility, driving, and dishing out assists. During the extended run, An no-look over-the-shoulder pass pass to a cutting Joe Mader for the lay-up put Bronaugh up 11-3.
Bronaugh freshman Carson Gray got in on the scoring spree, as a step-back 15-foot jumper gave the Wildcats a 16-3 advantage.
Early in the second quarter, Aherns knocked down his second mid-range jumper of the night as the Hornets trailed 18-7. Bronaugh struck back with baskets on back-to-back possessions, as Strunk scored on a slashing lay-up, followed by a precision Strunk pass to Mader for lay-in and a 22-7 lead. Bronaugh concluded the half with baskets from Carsen Gray and Strunk to take a commanding 31-11 halftime lead.
The Wildcats were never threatened in the second half, as they coasted to victory.

For Bronaugh, Mader finished with a game-high 12 points; followed by Carsen Gray with 11, which included three 3-pointers; Ausitn Gray, 6; Strunk 5 points and 8 assists; Dallas McIntire, 5 points; Bradley Evans, 4; and Chris Rider, 2. For the Hornets, Aherns fininshed with a team-high 11 points; followed by Jon Kellhofer with 8, and Coltin Sheperd with 2.
