NHS tennis opens season with team title
FORT SCOTT, Kan. ---- The Nevada Tigers' tennis team opened its 2017 campaign on a high-note, winning the Fort Scott High School-hosted tournament Tuesday evening.
The Tigers netted a combined 10 victories en route to capturing gold. Runner-up in the tournament was Fort Scott with nine victories, while Pittsburg (Kan.) took home bronze with four wins. Coffeyville (Kan.) slotted into third-place with three victories.
NHS singles results
* At No. 1 singles, Nevada's Jace Lanham placed first, cruising past Coffeyville's Jeff Solis 8-1, then edging Pittsburg's Cameron Lee 8-7 (7-5 tiebreaker), and finishing up with an 8-3 victory of Jacob Bailey (Fort Scott).
* Nevada's No. 2 Colson Fisher also notched first-place, blanking Coffeyville's Noah Echyson 8-0. Fisher then continued his dominating play, breezing past Pittsburg's Paul Worsley 8-1. Fisher concluded his day with an 8-5 defeat of Fort Scott's Nick Patton.
NHS doubles results
* Nevada's No. 1 doubles duo, Sheel Patel and Caleb Theis placed second ---- defeating Coffeyville's Adrian Ensaldo and Chris Ewy 8-2, followed by another decisive 8-2 win, this time over Pittsburg's Jake Russian and Griffin Cooper. Patel and Theis then fell to Fort Scott's Alex Gorman and Micah Self 8-5.
* Nevada's No. 2 tandem, Gabe Barnes and Tanner Gotschall also placed second. The NHS pair first defeated Coffeyville's David Ramirez and Jose Villanueva 8-2, and followed up with an 8-3 victory over Pittsburg's P.J. Monsour and David Green. Barnes and Gotschall then fell to Fort Scott's Elijah Wright and Joe Adams 8-5.
