Yoakam resigns from Nevada R-5, takes position with Neosho
Former Nevada High School head football coach Erik Yoakam has resigned from Nevada R-5 and accepted the defensive coordinator position with Neosho High School.
Yoakam, who was hired to replace Wes Beachler in 2013, compiled a 13-28 record during his four-year stint with Nevada. In addition to his new defensive coordinator position, Yoakam will also be a physical education teacher at Neosho, while his wife Emily also accepted a teaching position with Neosho.
“As of the April 28 Nevada R-5 Board of Education meeting, my wife, Emily, and I have resigned our positions with the Nevada School District,” Yoakam said in an email to the Daily Mail.
“We were presented with an opportunity in the Neosho school district and felt that it was the best situation for our family.”
Yoakam continued: “During my time at Nevada, I was fortunate to come in contact with some excellent young men. I cannot thank them enough for their hard work and dedication to the program, school and community while at Nevada High School.
“In the past four years, our family has met and developed relationships with some outstanding people who will leave a lasting positive impression in our lives. For their support we are thankful. We wish the school district and community the best of luck in the years to come.”
Yoakam added that he had several coaching opportunities on the table, and felt Neosho, a class 5 school, was the best fit because of his familiarity with newly hired head coach Leon Miller. Yoakam said he knew Miller from his coaching days with Girard (Kan.) High School.
“It was a good opportunity and I jumped on it,” Yoakam told the Daily Mail on Tuesday. “I have a good working relationship with coach Miller.”
Replacing Yoakam at NHS, is Yoakam’s predecessor Wes Beachler, Beachler previously coached the Tigers from 2011-12. Nevada finished the 2016 season 3-8 overall, falling to top-seeded Harrisonville 40-0 in the Class 4 district 6 semifinals.
