Second graders make a splash

Tuesday, May 9, 2017
Lane floats under the supervision of Jay Allen during one of the swimming lessons all second grade students in Nevada and Vernon County schools — as well as home schooled children — receive during the Osage Prairie YMCA’s annual Make a Splash program. During this lesson students must float on their back for 60 seconds, then turn over without touching the bottom of the pool. This is the Y’s third year for this program that is offered to the students at no charge. The students are also given instruction and timed in four other skills: tread water for 60 seconds, dive to the bottom of the pool and pick something up, float on their back for 60 seconds and swim 25 yards. See more photos on page 10.

Kadence Warner closes in on the finish of his 25-yard swim as Kevin Williams talks him through the finish as YMCA director Jeff Snyder watches.
Kierston Eador treads water as her instructor Monica Henderson encourages her.
Jeff Snyder, left, gives instructions to second grade students from Benton Elementary School, as Tiffany Pommier listens, before they have their fourth and final session in the pool.
