Tiger golfers collect postseason awards

The Nevada High School golf team, who finished third at the Missouri Class three state golf tournament for a second consecutive season, was honored at the team’s recent postseason awards cookout.
Senior John Quitno garnered the “Lowest Stroke Average” award for the 2017 season. Quitno’s 37.7 strokes per nine holes was tops.
Just behind Quitno, were fellow seniors Patrick Ferry, at 37.8 and Jacob Hammontree, averaging 38.4 strokes per nine.
• Ferry was awarded the “Fighting Tiger Award.” (Note: The award is voted on by team members as well as Nevada golf coach Brian Leonard).
Ferry capped his prep career with a bang, finishing runner-up at the Missouri Class 3 state golf tournament last month at Sedalia Country Club. In addition, Ferry carded the lowest final-round score.
Leonard said criteria for the award, includes: Displaying a positive attitude during practices and competitions; giving 100 percent during practices and competitions; being considered a team leader; and above all else –– exhibiting honesty and a supportive attitude toward the entire team and Nevada Tiger golf program.
2017 notable accomplishments
In addition to the team’s third-place finish at the state golf tournament, the Tigers won their first district championship in 25 years; collected the school’s first West Central Conference tournament title; finished first in the sectional-qualifying tournament, earning a bid to the Class 3 state tournament.
The Tigers set multiple program records during the 2017 season, including first-place finishes in six tournaments, runner-up in two tournaments and third-place in one event. The team also achieved:
• Lowest 18-hole team score in program history (set three different times) 300, 294, and 292.
• Lowest nine-hole team score (set twice) March 27th with a 147 and, April 11th with a team-score of 146.
• Quitno set the program’s low individual nine-hole record with a 4-under par 32 at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course. Additionally, the senior trio each tied the low individual 18-hole score of 1-under par at various points throughout the season.
“Congratulations to the entire Nevada Tiger golf team for a successful season,” said Leonard, who held the banquet at his home on June 8. Leonard noted that his squad tallied 91 victories in 2017 against other schools to just four losses.
