Fire department responds to American Legion

Monday, July 24, 2017
At 9:24 p.m., Friday, the Nevada Fire Department received a call about an electrical smell and smoke at the American Legion at 402 E. Cherry. According to a press release from Nevada Fire Chief William Thornton, the second floor of the building had a light haze of smoke and a strong smell of burning wires. Fire crews determined a motor on one of the air conditioners had seized up and were able to shut down one of the units. The other HVAC unit wasn’t able to be deactivated by turning off the breaker so KCPL was called to turn off power to the building until an electrician could fix the problems. No injuries were reported and no damage to the building was found.
