Lady Tigers finish second at season opening home invitational

The Nevada Lady Tigers placed runner-up at their annual golf invitational held Monday at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course. The Butler Lady Bears won the four-team tournament with a final score of 203.

“As a team, we still need to concentrate on consistency,” said 13th year head coach Brian Leonard. “Whether it’s on the tee box, the approach shot, chipping, or putting, we need to be consistent.”

Leonard indicated his squad was a little rusty in its 2017 debut.

“We also need to work on keeping the large numbers off of the scorecard,” he said. “​Bogies and a few double bogies will not hurt a score too bad; but (it’s) the triple bogies and higher that will wreck a scorecard.”

Nevada senior Mandy Crews finished with the low individual score of the nine-hole event, firing a 10-over-par 46 on the back-nine. Rounding out the top three individually, were Butler’s Katelyn McCrary with a 12-over-48, while Nevada junior Grace Palmer carded a 14-over-50.

“I have been pleased with our short-game so far,” said Leonard. “Their putting has been better than average for this time of the season.”

Concluding the Lady Tigers scoring, were: seniors Sammy Gundy with a 56 and Lily Quitno, 61; and junior Kaitlynn Vincent, 63.“I was very pleased with the play of Sammy,” said Leonard of the senior’s prep debut.

Added Leonard: “The course was in fantastic condition. There were a few wet areas from the weekend rains, but overall it is in great shape.”
