Lady Tigers derailed by Smith-Cotton in extras
Trailing 5-1 in the third, the Nevada Lady Tigers softball team mounted a furious comeback, eventually falling to Sedalia Smith-Cotton 8-6 in eight innings Thursday at Bushwhacker Field.
The West Central Conference loss brings Nevada’s record to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in WCC-play.
After scoring two runs in the home-half of the third, Lady Tigers freshman second baseman Abby Harder, trimmed Nevada’s deficit to 5-4 with a fourth inning solo blast into the left field bullpen. The home run was the first of Harder’s varsity career. Leading off the seventh, Lady Tigers clean-up hitter Hailee Lundine mashed a Raine Hester offering high over the left field wall, sending the contest into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Smith-Cotton plated three runs, via Darby Christian’s run-scoring single and Jasmyn Bayless’ 2-RBI double, to hand Sedalia an 8-5 lead.
Cameron Holcomb’s RBI double in the bottom of the eighth sliced the Smith-Cotton lead to 8-6, but that was as close as the Lady Tigers would get, as Lundine flied out to left to end the game.
