Lady Knights defeat Calhoun to remain perfect on season
The Northeast Vernon County Lady Knights fantastic start to its volleyball season continued late last week, with an impressive three-set non conference home victory over Calhoun.
The win improves NEVC to 4-0 overall (2-0 GVVC-play).
After getting edged 26-24 in the opening set, NEVC came back with a fury, clobbering Calhoun 25-2 in the second set.
The second set dominance was made possible by senior middle hitter Mary Thoreson, who collected 18 consecutive service points, while tallying a dozen aces.
NEVC rode its second set momentum into the third and decisive set, easily dispatching Calhoun 25-14.
“We started out a little rough,” said NEVC head coach Erica Mott. “Then in the second set they were ready to play and dominated.”
Mott said she’s thrilled with her squad’s undefeated start to the season.
“I’m very pleased that we are meeting our team goals and pushing through any tough times we may have,” noted Mott. “I am very proud of the team; they are working extremely well together and are all always striving to be better than the day before.”
For NEVC, Thoreson accumulated a whopping 21 aces, while senior outside hitter Maddison Ashby and junior middle hitter Kelly Dade combined for 10 kills.
