Lady Tigers stretch win streak to nine

The Nevada Lady Tiger tennis team extended its win streak to nine games after steamrolling Neosho on the road Monday, 9-0, followed by a 6-3 West Central Conference road victory over Smith-Cotton High School Tuesday evening.

The pair of victories improve the Lady Tigers to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in West Central Conference play.

“Things are just clicking with the girls right now,” said NHS tennis coach Samantha Short. “They have elevated their play and are correcting mistakes they make. It’s an awesome sight.”

Vs. Neosho

In singles matches, Emma Cheaney defeated Emily Mitchell, 8-1; Katherine Pruitt blanked Sarah Werner, 8-0; Mikena Padgett beat Baylee Scribner, 8-2; Hallie Short rolled past Kennady Watts, 8-1; Carlee McCaffree defeated Mariah Pina, 8-3; and Erica Craig bested Morgan Brattin, 7-1.

In doubles matches, Cheaney and Erika Watanabe throttled Mitchell and Watts, 8-0; Pruitt and Kaitlyn Hogan breezed past Werner and Scribner, 8-1; and Padgett and Short dispatched Pina and Brattin, 8-1.

Vs. Smith-Cotton

At No. 1 singles for Nevada, Cheaney fell to Elizabeth Marx, 8-4; No. 2, Watanabe coasted to victory over Mariya Slipych, 8-1; No. 3, Pruitt, nipped Jessica Kotok, 8-6; No. 4, Padgett won convincingly over Valenyna Usyk, 8-1; No. 5, Short was tripped up by Anna Slipych, 8-4; No. 6, Hogan nailed down an 8-4 victory over Maria Aonzo.

In doubles matches, Nevada’s top tandem — Cheaney and Watanabe flattened Marx and Usyk, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, Pruitt and Hogan dealt Mariya Slipych and Kotok an 8-2 defeat. And at No. 3 doubles, Padgett and Short netted an 8-3 win over Anna Slipych and Aonzo.

The Lady Tigers return to the court today for a crucial West Central Conference road-match with the St. Pius X Lady Warriors. St. Pius enters 12-1 overall and 3-1 in WCC-play. Meanwhile, St. Michael’s, who fell to Nevada but defeated St. Pius, is currently 4-1 in WCC-play.
