The Nevada Lady Tiger basketball team returned from Christmas break with a 39-33 non-conference victory over Seneca, Tuesday night at Wynn Gym.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to a quick 11-4 start, but began to slow offensively midway through the first quarter, scoring just one basket from the field over the final four minutes of the opening frame.

The Lady Tigers opened the second with a driving bucket from freshman guard Alison Bower to grab a 15-6 lead.

Pressure defense applied by sophomore forward Teagan Charles led to a Bower breakaway lay-in and 19-8 Nevada advantage. A Calli Beshore 3-pointer from the right win then put the Lady Tigers up 22-11 midway through the second. Seneca closed the first half on a 6-3 run, trimming its deficit to 25-17 at the break.

Late in the third quarter a Bower bounce pass to forward Lindsay Phebus on the right block resulted in a lay-in and 30-21 Nevada cushion.

Led by junior posts Sarah Hoover and Makayla Beard, Seneca charged back into the contest, slicing Nevada’s lead to 34-29 with 4:55 remaining in regulation.

A key play in the contest came near the midpoint of the fourth, when Phebus won a hard fought battle for rebound, tipping the ball out to shooting guard Hailee Lundine, who swished a triple from the right wing, as the Lady Tigers led 37-29 — a deficit Seneca was unable to overcome.

“It was a sluggish game,” said Lady Tigers head coach, Brent Bartlett, as his club improves to 7-3 overall.

“Sometimes, coming off Christmas break, that happens. I wish we could have created some easier opportunities offensively, because our offense struggled after the first quarter.”

During the opening minutes of the contest, Nevada received a pair of 3-pointers from sophomore guard Payge Dahmer, a three from junior guard Hailey Jackson and a bucket from Beshore, who finished with a team-high 9 points.

“We knocked down some shots early and were doing some good things,” noted Bartlett.

Bartlett added that he was impressed with the all-out effort of Phebus, who made several key hustle plays.

In addition, Nevada’s junior varsity team trounced Seneca, 43-11. For Nevada, freshman guard Tylin Heathman finished with a game-high 11 points, followed by Lindley Ferry with 8; and Kat Ream, 7.
