Quick call the cops, someone stole my meth …

Saturday, April 7, 2018

Responding to calls, investigating crimes and tracking down suspects is part of a daily task for deputies and investigators, but we have had a higher number of cases recently where the suspects are coming to us. People accidentally telling on themselves is one of those things that just happens; they cannot always help it when they mess up by alerting the cops to what they have done or who they are. Although it happens, I am still surprised each time and amazed at how little thought some criminals put into their criminal ventures. I have told the story before of the guy that was pulled over for a traffic stop and when asked for his ID stated, “there’s nothing in my trunk.” At another call, a man was asked if he had anything on him that was illegal. He glanced through the window of his house and said, “umm no, not on me.” There were drugs on the table just inside the window! We have had someone call to report his meth being stolen, someone call asking if we could go arrest someone for stealing their marijuana and we even had someone report items being stolen from them that they had stolen from someone else!

My first thought is always, “this guy is joking with us,” and each time I am surprised to find that they are not. When I read a report stating a person was arrested for DWI after accidentally driving to the Sheriff’s Office and getting their truck stuck in the backyard, I thought the deputies were pulling a prank on me. They were not, and the guy did not have a clue where he was; I guess you could just call it dumb luck. We have had someone come to the Sheriff’s Office giving us a fake name when their face was on the Most Wanted poster beside them, and we recently had someone bring drugs to the Sheriff’s Office in a Bible. We once arrested someone for breaking into a home, but they made the job of catching them much easier when they took a nap in one of the bedrooms and waited for us to get there. I think they learned that too many drugs can make you sleepy at any time! We once arrested someone who was flagging people down asking for a ride. The deputy asked if they needed help getting somewhere and the person said they could use a lift and climbed into the back of the car. Once they were in, the deputy asked if they were one of the people that just ran off on foot after a vehicle pursuit. The guy tried getting out, but it was too late because those doors won’t open from the inside. He got his ride, but it wasn’t where he had planned to go!

If someone has stolen your weed, if you have a warrant and need directions to the Sheriff’s Office, or if you want to bring meth to the Vernon County Jail, feel free to give us a call and ask for some help. We will be more than happy to help you take care of the problem, whether it be figuring out who you are, or helping you discover what is in the trunk, we can help you get it done. It would also never hurt to make the right decision in the first place and not need our help. You control your path, so make some smart choices and choose not to be the next visitor in the Vernon County Bed and Breakfast.
