Donald LeRoy Ashby Jr.
Donald LeRoy Ashby Jr., 53, Galena, Kan. (formerly of Nevada), passed away on Tuesday, May 22, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin from a recent diagnosis of lung cancer. Don was born Dec. 19, 1964, in Nevada, to Donald LeRoy Ashby Sr. and Judith Ann (Shields) Ashby.
Don attended Bronaugh and Nevada schools. Growing up, Don worked with his brothers and step-father on a family farm. Some of his earlier jobs after leaving home were various restaurants, and Nevada and Carthage Country Clubs. He was a caregiver and groundskeeper for many years. Don, in most recent years, worked for Cell-Tron in Galena, Kan.
Don liked spending time looking for Indian artifacts, metal detecting and going on adventures with his nephew Jacob. He built flower beds, rock gardens and loved being outside. Don loved his family and friends and had a kind word for everyone he met.
Survivors include one sister, Sharon Ashby, Nevada; two brothers, Tim Ashby, Branson, Mo., Scott Senkevech, Deerfield; a close friend, Todd Martin, Galena, Kan.; and several nieces, and nephews. He will also be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Rae Ann Cannefax.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Terry Mosher officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
